Thompson's (Hurricane Season) well-researched title winningly covers Robert Ripley's personal life and career. Ripley (1890–1949) grew up shy and stammering owing to protruding buckteeth, a lifelong condition that affected him in many ways, from wariness of women to overreliance on alcohol.
